Let's go Warriors! High School Highlights from the Edmonds Woodway Athletic Booster Club

In September and the beginning of October, Edmonds-Woodway High School showcased impressive performances across multiple sports:

  • Football: The Edmonds-Woodway Warriors had a notable victory early in September, defeating Lindbergh High School 13-0 at Renton Memorial Stadium, demonstrating their defensive strength. After that their league performance was mixed, as they fell short in some key matchups, but rebounded with a resounding and decisive 42-14 win against Shorecrest on October 11th. Key highlights included a stellar defensive performance by Lukas Wanke, who had two long interception returns in the third quarter, helping the Warriors break away and claim their first league win of the season. Thank you to Coach Gradwohl and all the other coaches and volunteers who have stepped up to support this team and our community in the last few weeks. The time they have put into these young men to get them prepared has made a profound impact.

  • Girls Soccer: The Varsity Warriors started the month with a spectacular 10-0 victory against Lynnwood, with standout performances from players like Vivianna Adkins, who led the team with multiple goals. They started October with three stellar wins against rivals Mount Lake Terrace and Meadowdale, with goalie Alice Everett racking up her 7th clean sheet of the season.

  • Girls Volleyball: Edmonds-Woodway's volleyball team had a strong month of September, winning several thrilling matches. One highlight was their 3-2 victory over Shorewood, with key players like Sawyer Hiatt (20 kills) and Addy Pontak (48 digs) making major contributions. Read on to learn about Coach Foley in our coach spotlight!

  • Swimming: The swim team had a commanding win over Mariner High School, scoring 140-22. Simone Bennett and Olivia Garcia were among the top individual performers in events like the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

  • Boys Tennis: The boys' tennis team secured key wins in the Wesco league, including a 5-2 victory over Shorecrest on September 23rd. Singles and doubles players consistently performed well, maintaining their competitive edge in close matches.

  • Cross Country: The Edmonds Woodway XC team had an impressive finish winning the WESCO EW-Meadowdale-Everett triad on October 9th. The girls had seven of the top ten fastest times with Aliah Karl and Phoebe Budell finishing #1 and #2. The varsity boys took two of the top ten spots, while the JV Boys dominated their race owning the top six spots.

How do you foster leadership and accountability within your team?

We are very clear at the beginning of the season about the standards that need to be in place in order for us to achieve the overall objective; to become the very best we can be, on and off the floor.  These have to do with the necessary underlining commitment; dedication and sacrifice that is required on varsity.  From there we are careful and methodical about selecting team captains.  I believe that people embrace what they help to create.  My teams select their own leaders by way of a vote.  Each player votes for two captains on a written ballot.  They make these selections after an overview of the 'job description' and a description of the key components to leadership for the Warrior Volleyball program.  After all of that is in place, the team holds itself accountable to the standards.
